JANE WILLIS
Jane Willis - Artist Statement
In painting I have been using masking, layering and transparency
in subjects which are often suggested
by my own photographs but in a somewhat abstracted way
and I enjoy setting up a process to produce marks.
In some cases this leads to outcomes
which are print-like, though not prints.
When printmaking I usually make monoprints
for the speed and excitement of seeing what unpredictable result
you have when the plate is lifted.
Occasionally I will do a more figurative lino cut or etching.
I find I am drawn nostalgically to the art and artists of the first half of the 20th century. So, some bowls of muslin and wallpaper paste, painted plaster tiles, repeat patterns for potential bolts of cloth….mainly trying
to achieve a simple and austere decorativeness.
